Street traders along the ever busy School Road in Aba were on Saturday, October 17, 2020, attacked by suspected armed robbers. The incident, which occurred at about 7pm, saw a lot of the traders losing the entire day’s sales and other valuables such as phones and clothing materials. Some shops between the stadium gate and Highlife junction were looted and valuables equally lost to the marauders.

A victim, Mrs Uloaku Nwanne, told News Express that she was surprised to see a group of young men numbering more than 15, “some of them wielding guns, shouting command at us to drop whatever we had inside a bag or be prepared to lose your life.”

Another trader, Mazi Ofobuike, stockfish dealer, was still in shock as he narrated his experience: “We have never experienced this before within this area, so naturally I am surprised this could happen in front of Enyimba Stadium” where security men normally stay at all times.

A visit to the nearby Ndiegoro Police Station revealed that policemen no longer go on patrol duties due to incessant killing of officers. A senior police officer at the station said that the perpetrators of the weekend robbery might be street urchins popularly known as Arrow Boys “who are notorious for this kind of robbery in the city.”
