The Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO) has urged the political class to emulate the forthrightness and sacrifice exhibited by Chief George Muoghalu, Managing Director/CEO of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

The Chairman of CLO Anambra State, Comrade Vincent Ezekwueme, made the call while speaking with newsmen in Enugu.

Ezekwueme spoke while commenting on the transparency and forthrightness in which Muoghalu had used to reposition and resuscitate the moribund Onitsha River Port.

“Muoghalu, who was appointed NIWA boss on October 1, 2019, promised to resuscitate the moribund River Ports and reactive Inland Water Transport for efficient service delivery, revenue, jobs and wealth creation for the government and citizenry.

“Also, Muoghalu in a meeting with the Onitsha business community and stakeholders early this year, promised to make Onitsha River Port not only functional but the port of final destination for South-East designated containers. We thought it was rhetoric and usual political statements.

“Fortunately, he has proved that there are still benevolent servant-leaders who can fulfil and accomplish their set goals for the citizenry.

“Pertinently, his recent commissioning of the arrival of barges of containers to Onitsha River Port is a dream come true.

“This singular act is the best, most cherished and celebrated project to the South-East for more than 40 years Onitsha River Port was commissioned by former President Shehu Shagari,” he said.

The CLO boss, however, urged Muoghalu to consolidate on the landmark achievement by dredging River Niger to enable ships berth at the port, and to also provide water-tight security in all waterways.

“The new NIWA boss is indeed the new face and hope of our dreamed politician and public servant.

“CLO commends President Muhammadu Buhari for his unique wisdom in finding Muoghalu worthy to be NIWA boss,” he added.
