The Southern Nigeria Peoples Mandate (SNPM) has commended the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Adamu, for expediting action on the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) nationwide.

The President of the group, Mr. Augustine Chukwudum, gave the commendation in a statement issued in Enugu on Monday.

Chukwudum noted that the police authorities had clearly shown that it listens to the people, Nigerians; the police is serving and as well responsive to their cry.

According to him, disbanding SARS is a welcome development because the outfit has deviated from its original mandate and expectation.

He said: “We also call on the Federal Government to put in place mechanisms to check police extortion on roads across the country.

“SNPM is optimistic that Nigerians will support the Federal Government mechanism to put an end to the issue of illegal tollgate collection all over the country.

“Police authorities should weed out its personnel in the habit of framing up innocent citizens, who did not give in to their biddings.

“SNPM demands that these crimes against law abiding and innocent citizens, done with impunity, should be stopped with immediate effect.”

The SNPM boss also called on the IGP to make sure those disbanded SARS operatives must be transferred far away from the former bases.

“We also recommend that the government must compensate innocent people killed by police and those policemen who killed them must be tried in court for murder.

“SNPM calls on the IGP to stop forming any other outfit within the police, because we have only one police with a mandate to protect the lives and property of Nigerians,” he added.
