Governor Ugwuanyi
By CHARLES IWUOHA
The Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Advocacy (LEAD) Network has called on Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State to jettison insinuation and suggestions to take automatic and self-decision on choice of his successor and political positions come 2023.
The Executive Director of LEAD Network, Mr Chukwuma Okenwa, made the call in a statement issued to newsmen in Enugu on Sunday.
Okenwa, however, called on Ugwuanyi, as a principle that guides every good statesman and peace-lover, to ensure he embraces wide consultation and internal democracy.
He described as regrettable a statement credited to Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, representing Enugu East Senatorial District and former Governor of Enugu State, that the governor reserved the exclusive right to decide who succeeds him on his own without consultations.
“One wonders if such a statement was consistent with the core Principle of Democracy which confers the right of choice to the people and not to one man.
“Entrusting the right of Choice to one man is tantamount to Monarchy and not Democracy; thus, subjecting the common will of the people to the Vulnerability of One man.
“Such kind of gesture would produce the kind of leadership that will be loyal to the Ebeano Dynasty and not to the good people of Enugu State,” he said.
The LEAD Network boss said that the Ebeano Dynasty should rather be sober; adding that its 21 years of leadership have not clearly distinguished Enugu State as the Old Eastern Capital of the both the South-East and the South-South.
Okenwa, who is a public affairs analyst, called on the good people of Enugu State to be more proactive with a firm resolve to make the issue of governance people-driven.
“It should not and never be the prerogative of a few or one man,” he added.
It would be recalled that on Sept. 19, Sen. Nnamani, founder of the Ebeano Political Dynasty, led the group to a solidarity visit to Gov. Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu, where he pledged absolute loyalty and support for Ugwuanyi’s political decisions in 2023.
