Over 500 youths and women from Ifitedunu community in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State have protested rising division in its community.

They accused people that contested the President General of the community and loss of brewing seed of discord in the community.

A 91-year-old man, Elder Obiorah Ekegha, who led the protest to the Government House in Awka the state capital over the weekend accused the election losers of trying to make the community ungovernable for the winner.

Addressing the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, Ekegha, the chairman of Ojiana, a powerful group in the community, said there have been trouble in the community since after its town union election in December.

He said: “Uche Nwoye who is now the President-General of the community won the election which was held on 28th and 30th December 2019, alongside his executives.

“But some people who contested the election and were rejected by the community have been trying to make the community ungovernable for him.

“We are here to tell Governor Obiano that there is no trouble in our community, the only trouble we have are those who lost the election. We are here because we heard that they came here to lie against the leadership of the community, but all they said is untrue,” he said.

In his response, the SSG, Prof Chukwulobelu said that there was a letter of complaint from some members of the community to the state government.

He gave assurance that government, through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, would look into the letter and also that of the protesters to find lasting solution to the issue and ensure that peace exists in the community.

He added: “I thank you all for the peaceful disposition you took, and of course you know that the Governor is a man of peace. He will ensure that peace continues to exist in your community.”
