Governor Obaseki
By NELSON DAFE, Benin City
Results announced so far in the high takes governorship election of Edo State show that incumbent governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is leading and heading for a comfortable win over his main rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Out of the three zones in the state, Obaseki won all the local government areas in Edo South and Edo Central in the results so far declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and is running neck-to-neck with Ize-Iyamu in Edo North, the stronghold of Adams Oshiomhole, the former National Chairman of APC.
As it stands, Obaseki has 236,735 votes to Ize-Iyamu’s 156,240.
Analysts say it is near impossible that this lead can be assailed by Ize-Iyamu with INEC set to declare the remaining 5 LGA results later Sunday morning.
There is growing relief amongst Obaseki supporters in Benin City who have woken up with ebullience as results trickle in and already congratulatory messages for governor Obaseki on social media have been flying around.
Collation of results is presently on break and billed to resume before 10:00 a.m.
