The Pro National Conference Organisation (PRONACO) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to initiate a "National Intervention Bill" to resolve Nigeria's constitutional crisis.

The pan-Nigerian movement which organised the first Independence-driven National Conference for NIgeria under the leadership of Late Chief Anthony Enahoro says, as the celebration of the country's Independence is around the corner, what will ensure future peaceful co-existence of the various components which make up Nigeria is a new people's constitution.

This call was contained in a statement issued earlier today Sunday, September 13 by PRONACO spokesperson and National Secretary of the Project Nigeria Movement (PNM), Sir Olawale Okunniyi, made available toNews Express.

According to the statement,

PRONACO, PNM and the Eminent Leaders Group applaud other nationality groups and stakeholders in the country for their recent endorsement of a brand new people's constitution for the country.

"We task President Buhari, as a former member of PRONACO, to initiate a National Intervention Bill to resolve Nigeria's constitutional crisis, instead of the ritual of cosmetic amendments by the National Assembly," said Okunniyi.

He disclosed that PRONACO is planning a national consultative summit to harmonise the position of Northern and Southern stakeholders on the constitutional future of Nigeria.

Part of the statement reads:

"We wish to state unambiguously that the way out of Nigeria's current constitutional morass and quagmire foisted by the Nigerian military at its exit from power in 1999 through the imposition of decree 24 called 1999 constitution, which today has generated so much instability, insecurity, mutual mistrust and in cohesion in Nigeria, is for the President of Nigeria, who incidentally was privy to the PRONACO process, to immediately initiate and drive an executive national intervention bill for urgent amendment of section 8 and 9 of the 1999 Constitution to allow for a new provision/clause that will enable Nigerian citizens assume the sovereign powers of referendum either directly or indirectly over the making and ownership of the Nigerian Constitution so that the National Assembly can also at some point, especially after the people's referendum have to enact Act to repeal the military decree erroneously being tagged 1999 Constitution, which has badly battered Nigeria's democratic experiment.

"To this end, a National Consultative Summit on the constitutional future of Nigeria, involving northern and southern elders and leaders of thought has been proposed by our Joint collaborative secretariat for October 1st 2020, Nigeria's Independence Day, to harmonise northern and southern positions on the constitutional future of Nigeria; in fastracking inclusive democratic resolution of the Nigerian national constitutional question."
