Afikpo South LG Chairman, Barr Eni lduma Chima
By CHARLES IWUOHA, Enugu
The Chairman of Afikpo South Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Barr Eni lduma Chima, has cavanssed for a single term of four years for elected council chairmen across the country.
Chima, who was re-elected for second tenure in office, stated this during the swearing-in ceremony of the 13 council chairmen held at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakiliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
The council chairman who was also a two time lawmaker represented Afikpo South West in the state House of Assembly, stated that two or three years may not be enough for Local Government bosses to complete projects they embarked upon for the people.
“Election is the process of choosing a representative to occupy elective position. When the masses come to vote for us, you have that feeling that a trust have been bequeathed on you. And trust is a burden.
“You have the responsibility both morally and otherwise to justify that trust. Just as I have recounted how people came home from all over the country to participate in the just concluded local government election in the state. You can’t afford to disappoint them. It gives you a challenge to make sure you continue to represent them very well, and you can’t take the masses support for granted.”
Chima further stressed that the newly elected chairmen are learning from the good works of the Governor David Umahi.
“We are just trying to replicate such good works in our local government areas. And we will do more projects in our second tenure.
“I have been a Care-taker Chairman on two appointments for two years. I have been an elected chairman, and so this one is an extra.
“But if I say, I am okay with two years, I will be selfish. Two years for me cannot be enough for me to complete all my numerous projects, and prepare for further election,” he stated.
