Explosion shakes Awka polling unit

People of Umuanyom Village in Awka, capital of Anambra State, were this morning jolted by the deafening sound of an explosion believed to be from an Improvised Explosive Device.

The scene of the explosion happened to be Community Ayom na Okpara Primary School, one of the designated polling units for today’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

Speaking with News Express, Mr. Izah Nwosu, who lives close to the school, said the incident occurred at about 7am.

News Express learnt that nobody was, however, injured or killed in the explosion, as it happened before INEC officials and prospective voters started coming out for accreditation.

In neighbouring Enugu State, an explosion had also occurred at WTC School 1, polling unit at about 7:38 a.m. leaving voters and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scampering for safety.
