The Anambra State Government has banned the hosting of public events in all the communities in the state without written authorisation from traditional ruler and President-Generals (PG) of each town.

A government statement released by the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Community Affairs said that only ‘private burials’ with not more than 30 people in attendance would be allowed in the state.

It explained that such written authorisations would be jointly signed by the traditional rulers and PGs, to keep them in the know of when and where any event would hold in their towns.

It added that the knowledge will also give them the opportunity to effectively monitor such gatherings.

According to the release, the Government will sanction any traditional ruler and PG who fail to enforce such directives in their communities.

The statement issued on Monday reads: “Effective immediately, the Igwes and the PGs will be held responsible for any breach of Government COVID-19 directive in their community.

“Any violation will not be tolerated and the Igwes and PGs have necessary means to ensure enforcement including use of Vigilance Organisations as well as the Police commands in their respective communities.

“The stark reality is that the pandemic is not over and we need to continue observing all directives as laid down by Government.

“All previous directives such as wearing of face masks and maintaining social distancing of about 6fts are still in place.”

While warning that COVID-19 pandemic was not over, it added that compliance to the protocols would henceforth be vigorously monitored at places of events in the state.
