Anambra State Governor, Chief Willy Obiano, has doubled his security vote from N5 billion to N10 billion in less than a year in office, the foremost rights group in the state has said.
In a statement it issued yesterday in Onitsha, the International Society for Civil Liberties & the Rule of Law (Intersociety) said that “the monthly security votes recorded spiral increases in 2014; from N420M a month (N5B yearly) in March 2014 to N625M in April/May 2014; and to about N850M in the last quarter of 2014 or about N10B yearly.”
According to Intersociety in the statement signed by its Board Chairman, Emeka Umeagbalasi; Head, Campaign & Publicity Department, Uzochukwu Oguejiofor, Esq.; and Head, Democracy & Good Governance Programme, Chiugo Onwuatuegwu, Esq., “The reported N10B annual security votes of Anambra State alone constitute about 20% of the state’s annual block federal allocations.”
The group had earlier accused the Obiano administration, which marks its one-year anniversary on March 17, of having sunk Anambra State into heavy debt, as it reportedly “borrowed $21M in the last six or seven months of 2014.”
The Anambra State Government has yet to respond to the allegations.
