A newborn baby girl thrown down from a storey building housing students of Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, is reportedly responding to treatment at Chukwunoso Specialist Hospital located in the area.

The baby was said to have been found hanging on a barbed wire of the fence of the building after her leg got stuck.

Information has it that the baby was thrown down by her mother, suspected to be a student of the institution, who connived with her boyfriend and an HND 1 student of Public Administration Department of the same institution who provided his apartment for the delivery. After the delivery, the baby was thrown away through the window.

Confirming the incident, a medical officer at the hospital, Chinonso Nwosu, revealed that the baby sustained a wound on the leg after being trapped by the barbed wire.

He said the child was receiving treatment to ensure she did not suffer temperature abnormality, adding that the suspect, who absconded following the incident, has been arrested and is currently breastfeeding the baby after she was brought to the hospital in handcuffs.

The Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mr. Obini Onuchukwu, said it was not clear if the suspect and her accomplices were students of the institution.

According to him, the security department of the institution is working round the clock to get full details of the incident.

“Besides, the incident happened in a private hostel, outside the polytechnic’s environment where the school authority is not in control of students’ actions,” Onuchukwu added.

While calling on parents to mould the character of their wards in godliness, Onuchukwu urged public-spirited individuals to donate hostel accommodations to tertiary institutions to assist in monitoring students actions.

He added: “There’s need for parents to maintain absolute intimacy with their wards by following them even in schools, to know the kind of friends they keep.

“On our part, we always organise regular orientation programs for students to advise them on better ways of life.”

Anambra State Police Spokesperson, DSP Haruna Mohammed, said the case was being investigated.

He said: “We found the story on the internet and we are carrying out investigation. I’ll get back to you as soon as investigations are over.”
