The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Tuesday denied allegations that its members took N15 million each from the State Government not to ask questions about the non-conduct of council election in the state.

The group made the declaration during a press conference in Awka accusing the government of Governor Willie Obiano of not only misleading the court but dragging the integrity and legacy of its form to the mud so as to continue the mismanagement of local government funds.

Speaking during the press conference, IPAC’s Director of Media, Peter Okala, said that it has written to the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) urging them to suspend the payment of revenues acrued to the 21 Local Government Areas in the state to Governor Obiano.

He explained that the action was to prevent further mismanagement of the fund by the state governor without dully elected chairmen spearheading the local government areas.

According to him, there was fraud in the local government system in the state following the State Governor’s failure to conduct council polls since he came to power in 2014.

Okala said: “It is on record that IPAC has made several representations to the Obiano’s administration, the Attorney-General of the State, the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly calling for the constitution of the state electoral body to pave way for the conduct of the local government election in the state.

“The Speaker was also been warned in one of our letters not to go ahead to confirm the illegalities at the local government level by extending the tenures of the so-called caretaker committees which he ignored.

“This is because it has become a notorious fact that each council caretaker chairman parts with N2 million to have the House of Assembly renew their tenure.”

Okala said that IPAC has set up a legal team that will storm the Federal High Abuja to put the records straight and correct the wrong.

Okala, who is the state chairman of National Conscience Party (NCP), reeled out other measure they have taken to ensure that the State Governor to conduct local government election to include organising stakeholders meeting comprising market leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations and the mass media to enlighten them on the issue at hand and have them become a part of the campaign to stop the nefarious activities at the grassroots level.

In his reaction, the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C. Don Adinuba, who spoke in a telephone interview, said that it was wicked for anyone from the state to write to outside agencies asking for the state be deprived of its funds.

He described the call by IPAC as the handwork of some fifth-columnists saying that they should be ignored

Adinuba said: “That matter is still in court as I speak. It is at the Supreme Court. Some people took the state to the state High Court and won, but we appealed and won and they went to the Supreme Court.

“So, we are barred from conducting the election until that matter is done with.”
