The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State has commended the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and his party for accepting the outcome of the election petitions tribunal on Wednesday.

The party observed that court process was part of the democratic process.

A statement by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Okelo Madukaife, urged the opposition party to join forces with the APC leadership and build a stable country.

He hailed the PDP for being an important partner in the democratic process and called for restraint and moderation where desirable particularly in the light of the transparency of the issues canvassed in the electoral tribunal.

The statement read in part: “Our dynamic chapter of All Progressives Congress expresses our profound congratulations to the Nigeria judiciary for breaking down the issues involved in the 2019 presidential Election Petition Tribunal to street understanding.

“This is important following many right and wrong interpretations of the issues in the litigation in the Internet and traditional media since March 2019, when the petition was filed by the candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who lost the February 2019 Presidential elections to our candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, and our great party, the APC.

“We commend Vice President Atiku Abubakar for his determination to see the electoral process completed to the gain of Nigeria’s democratic process and growth of the nation’s jurisprudence.

“We also congratulate President Muhamadu Buhari for his candour and humility displayed, while the issues where yet unresolved and he was under the scrutiny of the court of justice and court of public opinion, before emerging doubly victorious.

“While we acknowledge the efforts of Independent National Electoral Commission, we urge the electoral body to move into the process of amending relevant laws in the National Assembly to smoothen those new aspects of electoral operation.”

The party enjoined the National Assembly to work towards splitting INEC into two bodies, one to oversee the conduct of elections and referendum and the second arm to regulate the electoral process, including the electoral umpire and political parties.

The statement added: “Our joy is that all parts of this Democratic process are working together for the good of our fast-growing democracy, as the learning curve opens itself to improved processes requiring less and less litigation in future.

“To our dynamic chapter and our great party, we pray to celebrate without provocation as we look forward to delivering on the next level mandate conferred on us and wisely reconfirmed by the PEPT.”
