The Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has chided the Federal Government and journalists on strategy and coverage of insecurity in the country, particularly the spate of killings, kidnappings and attacks on Nigerians.

The NUJ CWC in a communique at the end of its meeting, Tuesday in Abuja, called on security agencies to overhaul their strategy to protect life and property.

It charged journalists and media organisations to give visibility and voice to ordinary Nigerians that are victims of kidnappings and other crimes, as in the case of the elite in the society, who occasionally fall victim but grab more media headlines and attention.

The communique signed by NUJ National Secretary, Mr. Shuaibu Usman Leman, called on elected political leaders across the country to provide responsive leadership and to fulfil their campaign promises with a view to restoring confidence of the people in governance.

While congratulating the Muslim Umma for commencing Ramadan, NUJ appealed to them to use the period to pray for peace, unity and security of the country.

It commended to the Federal Government for signing into law the new minimum wage of N30,000 per month, and appealed to state governments to, in the interest of progressive governance, ensure effective and timely implementation of the new national minimum wage.

The NUJ CWC called on the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders in the health sector to redouble efforts in reducing maternal and infant mortality which it noted is on the increase in the country.

“Consequent upon complaints following the refusal to allow some members to participate in the Ogun State NUJ Council’s election of March 29, 2019, the Central Working Committee resolved that the election be cancelled.

“Accordingly, the CWC directs the setting up of a five member caretaker committee to conduct fresh election within three months,” the statement asid.

With the on-set of rains, and the possibility of flooding in parts of the country, the union called on states prone to flood to take proactive remedial measures especially by increasing the enlightenment campaigns among the citizens on the need to clear drains and water ways.
