Umueze village, Isuanaocha in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been thrown into mourning following the death of a 29-year-old man who accidentally died while separating a brawl between a couple. The incident happened in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The wife of the deceased, Mrs. Chinenye Mkpume, said they had gone to bed at night when a female friend called her to come and help settle a family issue.

Barely controlling the tears rolling down her cheeks, she said: “We were at home when one of our family friends called me on phone that the husband was beating her.

“I had wanted to go alone but my husband insisted on going with me, not knowing it would be his last day on earth.”

Mrs. Mkpume said that, unknown to them, the lady friend had also invited some boys to their apartment for reasons best known to her.

“We were still making peace between the couple when some boys, numbering five, with familiar faces stormed the scene with axe and machetes. They pounced on my husband standing in front of the gate and cut off one of his arms and neck.

“The lady that invited me quickly dashed inside the house with her husband and locked the gate, leaving me and my husband at the mercy of the assailants,” Mkpume added.

She further explained that her husband managed to run into the bush with one hand and several machete cuts, but that all alarm raised to attract sympathisers failed as nobody came to their rescue.

He was later taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

News Express learnt that the deceased, Bonaventure Mkpume, who until his demise was the only son of his parents, had been happily married for about four years, but without children.

The mother to the deceased, Mrs. Grace Mkpume, in tears, called for justice to be done to those involved in her only son’s death.

When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Haruna Mohammed, said he was yet to be briefed on the development by the Divisional Police Officer in the area.
