The leadership crisis in Alor, Idemili South local government area of Anambra State took a new twist yesterday with the entire members of the community’s royal cabinet and who- is -who in the community describing weekend’s election of a new president general for the town as an illegal action.

At an election that took place on Sunday, Mr. Uzoma Igbonwa was returned as the president general after seven years of crisis that were laced with a number of court cases.

But addressing reporters in Awka, the chairman of Igwe’s cabinet, Dr. Ben Udeze said there is a legitimate town union executive which is still in control, urging the Anambra State government to intervene to stop the illegality in the area.

He said: “We, the concerned citizens of Alor ancient kingdom in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State have been constrained to react to the recent happenings in Alor concerning the purported attempt to illegally elect a formally sacked President General of Alor People’s Convention by the then Anambra State government in 2011, back to office on Sunday 17th February 2019.

“Alor People’s Convention Caretaker Committee, headed by Mr. Okey Elosiuba, who was duly appointed by the government of Anambra State remains the legitimate town union president of Alor.”

“The disgraceful actions of February 17th were not only meant to destroy the peace of Alor, but a well calculated affront on the rule of law and the government of Anambra State.”

“Since the institution of the Alor Peoples Convention caretaker committee by the Anambra State government, the government and the caretaker committee have continued to work hard to bring about peace and normalcy in Alor.”

“Indeed, the late Igwe Nkwoka heaved a sigh of relief when the caretaker committee was introduced; hence the sacked President General took a court injunction to halt his burial to disgrace him at death about one and half years later, but was defeated in court.

He said that when the people of Alor heard that some people were gathering for the election, they alerted the state government, only for the people to carry out the exercise in a private home.

He also said that the ban on conduct of town union election in the state was still in force, wondering why a group of people who were expected to know the law, chose to cause confusion in the community.

“What they did was a predetermined action to throw Alor into anarchy because they know the majority of our people are no longer with them. It is a sad commentary that someone who is supposed to know the law and had been in a position of trust could flout government order with impunity,” he added.

Udeze said although he was aware that there was a judgment, the said judgment had already been appealed before the purported election of February 17, 2019.
