The US Nigeria Law Group (USNLG) has welcomed the resolution passed on January 16 by the US Congress for transparency in Nigeria’s 2019 elections scheduled for February 16 (Presidency/National Assembly) and March 2 (Governorship/State Assemblies).

As reported by News Express on January 17, the Resolution was sponsored by Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), a top Democrat serving on the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, along with the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Elliot L. Engel (D-New York), the top Republican serving the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa Congressman Chris Smith (R-New Jersey), Nigeria Caucus Co-Chairs Representatives Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), Shelia Jackson Lee (D-Texas), and Representative Gregory Meeks (D-New York.

USNLG said in a statement signed by the Managing Partner, Emmanuel Ogebe: “Given the nefarious, ignoble and bizarre attack on the Chief Justice of Nigeria this week in what can only be interpreted as a desperate bid to consolidate dominance over all government structures to perpetuate Gen Buhari’s rein, the resolution is timely. The fact that the Africa subcommittee addressed the Nigerian election in the last week of session of 2018 and then again in the first full week of session in 2019 underscores the importance the US congresses attaches to the Nigerian elections.”

USNLG called on Rep Bass “to lead a bipartisan congressional delegation to monitor the elections in Nigeria next month.”
