National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Delta State Coordinator, Mr Benjamin Omotade, has cautioned Corps members serving in Delta to shun ethnic and religious division. Omotade said this in Asaba on Friday during a rally session to celebrate the scheme’s 45th anniversary.

He stated that the NYSC is one and does not know or recognise ethnicity or religion. He said that the moment a member puts on his ceremonial uniform; you hardly know which tribe he comes from or which religion he practices. He said that corps members should see themselves as members of one big family serving the nation. Besides, he noted that there is nobody with the privilege of serving this nation other than youth corps members and therefore appealed to them not to be divided regardless of ethnic or religious line they belonged to.

The NYSC Coordinator also enumerated the gains of the scheme that even in the most remote part of the nation, corps members are there. He maintained that there is no household in most parts of the country that has not produced a corps member. He used the opportunity to thank the people and government of Delta State for being responsible and responsive to the yearnings and aspirations of corps members in the state.

Speaking at the event, a corps member, Miss Tinyang Tinkwe, said it was a good experience being in the scheme adding that the service year has brought her to Delta from Taraba and that it had impacted positively on her future through its skills acquisition programme. She said she is grateful to God for using the scheme to teach her how to bake.

Also, Mr Genesis Odeh, another corps member corroborated Tinkwe’s views by saying that the scheme brought him from Benue to know Delta State for the first term in his life.

Odeh said that the Youth Service programme provides ground for networking among the youths, an opportunity to understand the society better and to move the nation higher.
