Contrary to the impression that the case of ailing First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, is hopeless following reports that she is suffering from uterine cancer, News Express can report this morning that the Mother of the Nation has bright chances of survival.

Painstaking research by News Express disclosed that uterine cancer, which several newspapers yesterday reported Dame Jonathan to be suffering from, is not a death sentence. The report that Dame Jonathan is suffering from uterine cancer had first been published on Sunday by a new online newspaper known as The Supreme but was largely unnoticed until PM News did a story on it yesterday – though without crediting the original source.

Even so, there appears to be no need to panic, as several medical sources confirm that uterine cancer is very much curable.

According to MediResource, a leading Canadian medical publishing group, uterine cancer is “one of the most curable cancers.”

The article entitled “The Facts on Uterine Cancer” and published on the group’s website, C.health, disclosed that “each year, about 3,900 Canadian women are diagnosed with cancer of the uterus, with a survival rate of over 80%. This figure is higher if the cancer is caught early.”

The article, which was written and reviewed by a powerful faculty of medical experts, explained that “cancer of the uterus is the most common cancer of the female reproductive organs,” adding: “It’s the fourth most common cancer among women overall, behind breast cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer.”

Other medical sources researched by News Express had similar things to say on uterine cancer.

If indeed the First Lady is down with uterine cancer, it would not be a surprise because she has most of the risk factors, among them being plus size and aged above 40 years.

“A diet high in fat can be a risk factor in itself. Physical activity can be protective even without the added benefits that losing weight may have,” said MediResource.

It mentioned removal of the uterus (hysterectomy) as one way of treating the sickness, adding, however: “In more widespread cancer, radiation, chemotherapy, or both may be offered instead of (or after) surgery . . . Synthetic progestins, a form of the hormone progesterone, are sometimes used to treat endometrial cancer when it is advanced or when it recurs. Synthetic progestins have only mild side effects compared to typical cancer medications; however, the chance of success when treated by chemotherapy or progestins alone is very low.”

It would be recalled that Dame Jonathan (shown in photo) has been incommunicado since late July. Though her spokespersons and those of her husband claimed that she was resting abroad, it has since become known that she is actually receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment at Horst Schmidt Klinik in Wiesbaden, Germany.
