Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi today in Washington D.C., USA, won the 2013 Central Bank Governor of the Year Award for Sub-Saharan Africa.

“The award recognizes Governor Sanusi’s ability to bring down inflation to single digits this year” said Antonia Oprita, managing editor of Emerging Markets, organisers of the award being conferred on Sanusi tonight during the World Bank Groups meetings.

A statement by the organisers a copy of which is in the possession of News Express said that the CBN under Governor Sanusi’s stewardship has brought inflation below 10% despite the fact that food, a category where the bank cannot influence prices, makes up around half of consumer spending in Nigeria.

It quoted Governor Sanusi as saying: “Our consistently tight monetary policy stance going back to 2010 should keep inflation within the single-digit target.”

The awards are chosen by Emerging Markets’ editorial team, taking into account the views of leading regional experts.
