The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, His Royal Majesty Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR has promised to lead the Federal Government’s initiative of the introduction of speed limiters in commercial vehicles, to ensure Ogun State highways are removed from the list of the ten most dangerous highways in Nigeria.

The Alake who berated the incessant road traffic crashes in the state, especially along the Abeokuta – Sagamu highway, around Onipepeye, said the axis had claimed several precious lives including that of a former Secretary to Ogun State Government, Otunba Adegbemi Onakoya. The Alake also recalled that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo – a former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had also experienced a minor road traffic crash at the same Onipepeye along Abeokuta – Sagamu expressway.

The Alake made this remark when the newly posted FRSC Sector Commander, Ogun State, Corps Commander, Clement Oladele, paid him a courtesy visit in his palace, Abeokuta Ogun State, to seek his Royal Blessings. The Alake commended FRSC for the safety of road users in Nigeria and advised Sector Commander to erect warning signs by Onipepeye along the Abeokuta - Sagamu highway to stem the frequent road crashes along the road.

The Sector Commander assured the Alake that prompt actions would be taken towards making Ogun Highways safer, in line with the goals of the UN Decade of Action for road safety (2011 -2020) as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. Corps Commander Oladele also assured the Alake and the good People of Ogun State that the FRSC Ogun State Command under his leadership has outlined strategies that would ensure the removal of Ogun State highways from the ten most dangerous highways in Nigeria.

The Sector Commander also disclosed that with the ongoing advisory enforcement on speed limiters, less than 2% of the commercial vehicles operating in Ogun State have so far complied with the regulation on the installation of the speed limiters. He therefore advised commercial motorists to comply before the full enforcement commences by 1st January 2017.
