Former Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised what he described as a growing culture of misplaced loyalty among Nigeria’s political elite, warning that many leaders are more loyal to personal interests than to the nation and its Constitution.

Obi stated this in a tweet on Tuesday, January 27, after attending the launch of The Loyalist, a book written by Hon. Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in Abuja.

“Today in Abuja, I attended the book launch of The Loyalist by Hon. Bolaji Abdullahi,” Obi said, stressing that “the subject of loyalty in Nigeria is of utmost importance.”

According to him, Nigeria is facing a leadership crisis defined by weak national commitment. “We live in a nation where many elites in leadership positions demonstrate little to no loyalty to the country, its Constitution, its unity, its progress, or the welfare of its citizens,” Obi said.

He added that the loyalty of such leaders is often misplaced. “Instead, their loyalty often lies with self-interest and the reckless looting of public resources,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra State governor further noted that those who stand for constitutionalism and good governance are frequently penalised. “It is disheartening that those who choose to uphold loyalty to the Constitution, advocate for good governance, and prioritise the well-being of the people are frequently marginalised, victimised, or ostracised,” he said.

Obi also criticised what he described as a distorted understanding of loyalty in the political space. “Our political landscape is marked by a selfish interpretation of loyalty, rather than genuine loyalty to the nation,” he said.

Commending the author, Obi described the book as a meaningful contribution to national reflection. “I commend Hon. Bolaji Abdullahi for this work,” he said.

He concluded by reaffirming his personal commitment to national values, saying, “I remain firmly committed to the unity of Nigeria, respect for the Constitution, the rule of law, and the welfare of our citizens.” According to Obi, “a new Nigeria is not just a dream; it is absolutely achievable.”
