The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to adopt a more empathetic and disciplined approach to crisis communication following the alleged abduction of worshippers in Kaduna State.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, expressed concern over the initial public dismissal of the Kurmin Wali community abduction in Kajuru Local Government Area before a thorough verification was conducted.

Okoh said that while verifying incidents in remote areas is difficult, it does not excuse lapses that suggest indifference to the plight of victims.

“The initial public dismissal of reports about this incident was deeply troubling.

“It generated confusion, heightened fear, and unfairly questioned the credibility of nearly 170 worshippers, their families, clergy, and eyewitnesses who raised the alarm,” he said.

The association emphasised that statements from senior security officials carry significant weight and must be guided by due diligence to maintain public trust and social stability.

While criticising the initial handling of the report, CAN acknowledged the subsequent confirmation of the incident and the proactive steps taken by the Inspector-General of Police.

Okoh appealed for the immediate and unconditional release of all those abducted at Kurmin Wali.

“We pray that they are returned safely and unharmed, and we urge security agencies to intensify all efforts operational, intelligence, and diplomatic towards securing their swift rescue,” Okoh stated.

CAN reaffirmed its commitment to standing with affected communities and engaging constructively with authorities to ensure accountability and lasting security across the nation.

CAN’s reaction follows the police’s reversal of their stance, from denying the abduction to confirming it after conducting further investigations.

The police spokesperson explained that the initial denial was due to conflicting reports and the need for verification.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, had since ordered the deployment of additional operational and intelligence assets to the area to rescue the victims and restore security. (NAN)
