Amazon to Slash 30,000 Corporate Jobs in Cost-Cutting Push Led by CEO Andy Jassy

Amazon is reportedly preparing one of its largest rounds of layoffs in years, with as many as 30,000 corporate workers expected to lose their jobs as early as this week, according to report.

The planned cuts, said to be part of a broad cost-cutting effort led by Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy, would affect about 10% of the company?s corporate workforce. However, it remains a small fraction of Amazon?s global headcount of more than 1.5 million employees.

If confirmed, this would mark Amazon?s biggest job reduction since 2022, when the company laid off roughly 27,000 workers over several months amid a post-pandemic slowdown.

Reports also indicated that the layoffs will target white-collar roles across management, sales, and other executive departments, though the specific regions or departments to be affected have not been disclosed.

Amazon declined to comment on the reports when contacted by the BBC.

The company?s current corporate workforce stands at about 350,000 employees, based on filings with the US government. Like many major tech firms, Amazon expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic to meet surging online demand.

However, as growth slows, Jassy has intensified efforts to streamline operations and cut costs while investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and automation to enhance efficiency.

Speaking in June, Jassy acknowledged that the company?s growing use of AI would inevitably reshape its workforce. ?We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,? he said.

If carried out, the layoffs would underscore a continuing trend of workforce reductions across the global tech industry, as companies recalibrate amid automation advances and changing market demands. (ARISE NEWS)
