The Lagos State Government has announced that construction of the $3 billion Green Line rail project, connecting Marina to the Lekki corridor,

Is scheduled to commence in December 2025.

The announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, via a statement on the official Lagos State Government X account.

According to Osiyemi, extensive feasibility studies and consultations with stakeholders along the Lekki-Epe corridor have been conducted in preparation for the project.

The rail line is expected to be completed within two to three years and will be delivered in phases. The first phase will cover the stretch from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe, while the second phase will feature an on-water segment starting from Marina.

?The government has engaged extensively with stakeholders and carried out thorough feasibility studies along the Lekki-Epe Expressway Corridor to ensure the Green Line project?s success,? Osiyemi said.

This announcement follows intensified enforcement along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, where authorities have cleared encroachments and restored wetlands necessary for the Green Line?s right-of-way.

The 70-kilometre rail line will feature 17 stations, running from Marina through Victoria Island, Ajah, Sangotedo, and Lekki Free Trade Zone.

The project will include modern station designs equipped with pedestrian bridges, elevators, escalators, and a depot near Sangotedo, plus a large parking facility at Lekki Free Zone.

Trains are planned to run in eight-car B-type sets, with speeds of up to 100 km/h, a minimum headway of three minutes, and a capacity to carry 35,000 passengers per hour per direction.

The $3 billion project is partially funded by federal counterpart funding of N146.14 billion, included in the 2025 budget, and is being developed through a tripartite agreement with China Harbour Engineering Company, responsible for designing, financing, and operating the line.

Experts have raised concerns regarding station spacing and operational capacity, noting that sparse coverage in Victoria Island and large gaps in Lekki may limit ridership. Suggestions to add stations in high-traffic areas and align the Green Line with existing transit networks have been made to enhance accessibility and efficiency. (AriseNews TV)
