Montell Jordan is sharing a health update with fans.

The “This Is How We Do It” singer, 56, appeared on TODAY on Wednesday, Sept. 3, saying that, nearly a year after having his prostate removed, follow-up scans detected cancer in his lymph nodes.

"I always imagined I would be telling my prostate cancer story from the other side of prostate cancer because I had a radical prostatectomy surgery. My prostate was removed. There were clear margins," he said.

"Close to a year post-prostatectomy, I still need to go back and have additional treatments because it’s [been] detected that there is still cancer."

Jordan’s cancer was discovered in early 2024 via a PSA test. Short for Prostate-Specific Antigen, it’s a protein made by the prostate, and high levels could indicate cancer, the Cleveland Clinic explains.

As Jordan told Today, he had more than ten years' worth of tests, which helped detect his cancer: "I would go regularly to my doctor for screenings, and at that time — we’re talking over a decade ago — most prostate screenings were kind of taboo," he explained, as they were rectal exams. "I would do that, and they were taking blood samples."

"Because I was going and had a history of what my blood levels were like, that’s how they were able to detect it,” he said of his cancer last year, which was upgraded to stage 2 after a biopsy showed it was "aggressive."

"Early detection is the thing that allows me to have a choice to treat [my cancer] and live and to continue giving myself the best quality of life possible," he told the outlet.

Now, Jordan will undergo targeted radiation to treat the cancer in his lymph nodes, as well as take hormone blockers to stop the cancer’s growth. As he said, "It is a seven-and-a-half week interruption of life to make sure that I have a longer life."

Jordan explained that he’s talking about his cancer diagnosis to help remove the stigma. Because it "deals with manhood," he said, "that is definitely a reason why men don’t talk about it."

Along with disclosing his diagnosis, Jordan has partnered with the nonprofit Zero Prostate Cancer and is sharing his health journey in the documentary Sustain, due out next year.

As he explained, "I’m trying to give a template for people that get diagnosed with this to ... know they have options available to them."

"It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to shake your fist at God. It’s okay to navigate and do what you need to do, but doing nothing is not an option," he said. "I never knew there was such a thing as being a two-time cancer survivor, so that’s the journey that I’m on right now." (PEOPLE)
