Living alone can be exciting because you get to live your day on your terms. You don?t have to include someone else who?s living with you in your plans all the time; if we are being honest, that can be demanding.

However, the downside is that your safety could be easily threatened. Having a secure home gives you peace of mind, and you don?t have to worry about something bad happening to you.

So let?s look at some simple home security tips that can help people who live alone.

1. Change the keys

If you?re moving into a new place that someone has lived in before, you could change the locks and keys, provided the homeowner or landlord permits it. This is an underrated but important home security tip, as you have no idea what has gone wrong in the past, especially with the level of access that the previous occupant had to the place.

2. Install security devices/lights

Security devices such as cameras with the ability to detect movement, and smart doorbells, to mention a few, can be a great way to ensure tight home security. These will help you see if there?s an impending danger without having to answer the door or get answers to concerns that you may have about strange happenings in your home. This might be expensive, but necessary. However, you can look for more affordable and easy-to-operate options.

3. Keep vital information to yourself.

Not every information about you should be known by a stranger who knows next to nothing about you. This is because the more transparent you get on social media, the more likely you are to attract danger from unknown places/people.

If at all you need to share information with people online, try as much as possible to leave your exact location out of it.

4. Keep entry points closed.

An easy way to have your home security breached is to keep entry points unguarded or open. From the gate, and doors to the windows, ensure that they are properly secured before you go out and before you sleep. The reason you need to ensure that these places are properly secured is because they are potential entry points for intruders.

Remember you live alone, and having an intruder in your home without knowing what their motives are can be dangerous.

5. Don?t be a loner

Make friends. You might be wondering what home security tip this is, or maybe not. Make friends with your neighbour and have a cordial relationship with them. No one knows when an emergency will likely come up ? these things are usually unprecedented, and in that moment you might need someone to assist you and bail you out.

Also, it helps you to be able to easily identify new faces and call them out if anything suspicious comes up. But how do you know that something suspicious is happening when you don?t even know your neighbour?s face?

Above all, choosing to live all by yourself comes with the responsibility of ensuring that your home is safe, which is why you need to put home security measures in place. (Nigerian Tribune)
