Driving in Nigeria comes with its challenges, including frequent police and road safety checks.

To avoid unnecessary harassment, delays, or even fines, ensure you always have these essential documents and items in your vehicle:

1. Driver?s licence

Your driver?s licence is the most important document that proves you are legally allowed to drive. An expired or missing licence can result in penalties or even vehicle impoundment. Ensure yours is valid and easily accessible.

2. Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC)

This document confirms your car is duly registered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Without it, authorities may assume your vehicle is stolen or not roadworthy.

3. Proof of ownership

The proof of ownership document helps verify that the car belongs to you. This is crucial, especially during police stops where they may suspect a stolen vehicle.

4. Insurance certificate

Third-party motor insurance is mandatory in Nigeria. It covers liabilities in case of accidents. Without it, you could face legal trouble or fines from the police or road safety officials.

5. Roadworthiness certificate

This document proves that your car has passed the necessary inspection and is safe to be on the road. The Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) may request this at checkpoints, and not having it can lead to penalties.

6. C-Caution sign, fire extinguisher, and spare tyre

Aside from documents, you must have certain safety items in your vehicle. The C-Caution sign warns other motorists if their car breaks down, while a fire extinguisher and spare tyre can prevent emergencies from escalating.

7. Tinted glass permit (If applicable)

If your car has tinted windows, you must obtain a tinted glass permit from the Nigerian Police Force. Driving without this permit could lead to fines or having your vehicle impounded.

Other important items you should have in your car for emergency purposes, especially when driving on the highway, include: spare fan belt, torchlight, wheel spare, jack, razor blade, hydraulic, four litres of water, transmission fluid, safety pins, adhesive tape, jumper cables, and first aid kit.

Always keep your documents in a safe but easily accessible place in your car. Laminate copies of essential papers and store them in a waterproof folder to prevent damage. Being prepared will save you from unnecessary stress and ensure a smoother driving experience in Nigeria. (BusinessDay)
