In football, few phenomena spark as much debate as the ?new manager bounce.? It?s the belief that when a struggling team appoints a new manager, their fortunes take a sudden and dramatic turn for the better. This idea fuels the decision-making of desperate club owners, particularly those overseeing relegation-threatened sides, who believe a managerial shakeup can save their season. But is this bounce a genuine trend or just a convenient myth?

There?s no denying that some teams experience an immediate upturn in form when a new boss takes charge. Take Leicester City?s appointment of Nigel Pearson in 2014. The Foxes were bottom of the Premier League, seemingly doomed to relegation. Pearson?s arrival sparked an incredible run, culminating in Leicester staying up and eventually winning the league the following season under Claudio Ranieri. The bounce wasn?t just real; it set the stage for historic success.

Another notable example is Chelsea?s appointment of Thomas Tuchel in January 2021. After a stuttering start under Frank Lampard, Tuchel transformed the Blues, leading them to a Champions League triumph just months later. The bounce wasn?t fleeting; it laid the foundation for sustained success.

However, not all managerial changes produce long-term success. Consider Ole Gunnar Solskj?r?s interim appointment at Manchester United in 2018. The Norwegian enjoyed a sensational start, winning 14 of his first 19 games, including a famous Champions League comeback against PSG. Yet, once the honeymoon period ended, United?s form stagnated, and the same structural issues resurfaced.

Watford offers perhaps the most cautionary tale. Their habit of hiring and firing managers has seen temporary improvements?but never enough to secure Premier League stability. Each bounce has been short-lived, with the club yo-yoing between divisions.

Sometimes, a managerial change does little to alter a team?s fortunes. Everton?s appointment of Frank Lampard in 2022 aimed to halt their slide into relegation. While there were flashes of improvement, the Toffees continued to struggle, narrowly avoiding relegation in his first season before falling into trouble again.

In these cases, the bounce is more wishful thinking than reality. The same underperforming players, lack of depth, or poor club management that hindered the previous manager often persist.

What explains the new manager bounce when it does occur? Several factors come into play. Players often feel compelled to impress a new manager, especially those hoping to secure their place in the starting lineup. This heightened effort can lead to short-term improvement. A fresh set of ideas can disrupt opponents accustomed to the previous manager?s predictable approach. Changing leadership can lift the mood within the squad, particularly if the outgoing manager?s tenure was marked by tension or negativity.

Yet, these factors may only provide a temporary boost. Once the initial energy wanes, the team?s underlying issues often resurface.

So, is the new manager bounce a thing or a myth? It?s both. It?s a short-term reality that can inspire hope but often lacks the substance for sustained success. For fans, it?s a thrilling narrative; for club owners, it?s a risky gamble. In football, as in life, there?s no substitute for good planning and patience?even if a managerial change brings that elusive bounce.

For every Thomas Tuchel or Nigel Pearson, there?s a Frank Lampard or a revolving-door Watford coach whose impact is minimal or short-lived. The new manager bounce can?t replace the hard work of building a cohesive squad, investing in player development, and fostering a clear playing philosophy.
