The African continent continues to showcase diverse living standards, presenting both challenges and opportunities for its residents. The quality of life index, a key metric for evaluating the livability of countries, considers several factors such as cost of living, purchasing power, safety, healthcare, and air quality.

South Africa remains the top-ranked African country for quality of life in 2024, though its score has dipped from 152.4 in 2023 to 136.9. Morocco has made notable strides, moving from third to second place with a score of 104.7. Meanwhile, Nigeria?s ranking has fallen from fifth to sixth, with a score of 49.5, reflecting worsening living conditions due to inflation, unemployment, and infrastructure challenges.

The quality of life index shows fluctuating global trends, influenced by economic and political shifts. While South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, Kenya, and Egypt lead the continent, other countries face varying levels of economic and social challenges.

According to Numbeo, here are the top 5 African countries with the best quality of life in 2025

1. South Africa ? Index: 152.4

South Africa continues to lead the continent in terms of quality of life, with a score of 152.4. Known for its strong infrastructure and a well-developed healthcare system, South Africa remains an attractive destination for both locals and expatriates. The country?s diverse economy, bustling urban areas, and scenic landscapes offer a good balance between work and leisure. However, challenges such as security and unemployment persist, affecting some regions more than others. Despite these concerns, South Africa?s position at the top indicates its resilience and growing potential.

2. Tunisia ? Index: 117.3

Tunisia ranks second with a Quality of Life Index of 117.3. As a country located in North Africa, Tunisia offers a mix of Mediterranean coastlines and historic landmarks. Its healthcare services are among the best in Africa, and its cost of living is relatively low compared to many other countries on the continent. While Tunisia enjoys political stability, the country still faces economic challenges that hinder its overall growth. Despite these obstacles, the combination of affordable living and accessible healthcare makes Tunisia a top choice for many.

3. Morocco ? Index: 110.8

Morocco secures the third spot on the list with a score of 110.8. The country has experienced steady economic growth and offers good living standards, especially in cities like Marrakech and Casablanca. Morocco boasts a rich cultural heritage, excellent public transport, and quality healthcare services. The country?s proximity to Europe and its strong tourism sector contribute significantly to its position on the index. However, there are areas where infrastructure could improve, and some residents continue to face socio-economic challenges. Still, Morocco?s high ranking highlights the overall positive quality of life it offers.

4. Kenya ? Index: 101.7

Kenya, with a score of 101.7, ranks fourth in the region. The country?s growing economy, particularly in technology and agriculture, makes it an increasingly attractive destination for individuals looking for opportunities in various sectors. Nairobi, often dubbed ?Silicon Savannah,? is rapidly becoming a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, Kenya offers beautiful landscapes and a warm climate. However, while there are many advantages to living in Kenya, the country still faces challenges such as high levels of inequality, access to quality healthcare, and security concerns in certain areas.

5. Egypt ? Index: 85.3

Egypt rounds out the top five with a score of 85.3. Known for its rich cultural heritage and ancient history, Egypt also benefits from a strategic location that connects Africa to the Middle East. The country?s economy has grown in recent years, and it has invested heavily in infrastructure development. However, challenges related to unemployment, air quality, and cost of living persist. Despite these issues, Egypt?s position on the list reflects significant improvements in urban development and social services, contributing to a higher quality of life for its residents.
