As schools prepare to reopen for the second term activities of the 2024/25 academic session on January 6, parents and students are urged to take deliberate steps to ensure a seamless transition back into academic life.

With the break coming to an end, this period presents an opportunity to reset, plan, and align goals for improved academic performance and personal development.

Speaking to PUNCH Online, the Head of School at Offsprings Ilm, Kwara State, Alli-Oluwafuyi Lateefat, emphasised the importance of collaboration between schools, parents, and students.

She said that while schools are ready to welcome students, the role of parents and children cannot be understated.

?We are excited to receive our students after the holidays, and we expect them to return with renewed energy. Learning can be just as enjoyable as play if approached with dedication,? she noted on Thursday.

Lateefat further highlighted the importance of parental involvement in monitoring academic progress, underscoring that a strong partnership between home and school is essential for student success.

Meanwhile, some parents who spoke to PUNCH Online talked about the economic strain, bills, and transportation, among other things.

Mr Tunbosun Esho, a father of three, expressed concerns about the increasing cost of school supplies and daily expenses.

?With the way prices keep rising, getting everything ready for the new term is becoming more difficult. We want the best for our kids, but it?s not easy balancing tuition, transportation, and other bills,? he said.

Similarly, Mrs Nafisat Bakare, a mother of two, emphasised the burden of managing household finances alongside school expenses.

?Transport fares alone have doubled since last term, and it adds up quickly. We?re doing our best, but sometimes it feels like you have to choose between essentials and school needs,? she remarked

Here are 10 essential actions parents and children should prioritise for a productive second term:

Review Academic Progress

Parents should take time to assess their child?s performance during the first term. Identifying areas that need improvement and collaborating with teachers can help create a tailored plan for academic growth in the new term.

Prepare Necessary School Supplies

Avoid disruptions by ensuring that children have all the required textbooks, stationery, uniforms, and other school essentials in time for the new term. Early preparation fosters a smooth start.

Establish a Study Routine

A structured study routine at home is key to balancing homework, study time, and recreational activities. Parents can work with children to establish a plan that maximises productivity and minimises stress.

Prioritise Health and Hygiene

Parents should ensure that their children have personal hygiene essentials like hand sanitizers, face masks (if required), and clean uniforms. Regular health check-ups are also vital to avoid absenteeism due to illness.

Encourage Open Communication

Fostering a positive environment for communication is crucial. Children should feel comfortable discussing any challenges or concerns they may face at school. Maintaining regular communication with teachers is equally important.

Support Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities play a crucial role in developing well-rounded skills and promoting social interaction. Encouraging children to participate in sports, clubs, or other activities can enhance their personal growth.

Teach Responsibility and Time Management

Helping children learn to manage their time effectively will ensure they meet academic deadlines and avoid last-minute rushes. Guiding them to prepare for school the night before fosters responsibility and reduces morning stress.

Monitor Digital and Social Media Use

In the digital age, it?s important to regulate children?s online activities. Parents should ensure that digital usage doesn?t interfere with academic responsibilities and promote the use of educational content.

Ensure Proper Rest and Nutrition

Proper nutrition and adequate sleep are essential for academic success. Parents should encourage healthy eating habits and ensure their children get enough sleep to maintain focus and energy levels.

Encourage a Positive Attitude Towards Learning

Motivating children to stay curious and view school as a space for growth will foster a love for learning. Reinforcing the value of education and personal development helps children develop a positive attitude toward their academic journey. (The PUNCH)
