A yet-to-be-identified woman said to be in her early seventies has met her untimely death after a vehicle rammed into her at Jemi Alade Estate in the Isheri-Olofin area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened on Saturday.

It was gathered that the deceased and her friend were heading to their home in the estate, which was just some metres away, when a car that was in reverse knocked her down.

An eyewitness who identified himself simply as Olajide told our correspondent that the woman died instantly on the spot.

He said, ?They are close friends and they?ve been living in the estate for a while. They were returning from an occasion when an elderly man was reversing from his compound on the street. His brake failed and that was how he knocked the woman down. People quickly rushed to the spot to see if they could revive her but she was discovered to have stopped breathing. It was a terrible situation that day as some people started locking up their shops.?

A resident who spoke to our correspondent said the vehicle?s speed also caused it to crash into a beauty salon opposite the house it drove out of.

The resident said, ?After the vehicle rammed into the woman, it went ahead to crash into a beauty salon, damaging part of its extension. It would have even been fatal if someone was sitting on the spot. People could not do anything when the incident happened. It was later that the police arrived at the spot and evacuated the corpse to the mortuary.?

During a visit to the community on Tuesday, our correspondent observed the damaged shop was undergoing repair while the owner declined to speak on the incident.

A source in the Idimu Police Station, where the incident was reported, said an investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of the accident.

?The man who drove the vehicle has been reporting at our station since the incident occurred,? the source disclosed.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, could not be reached as calls made to his phone were not responded to. A text message sent to him had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed. (Text, excluding headline: The PUNCH)
