Ex-militant leaders from the Niger Delta on Monday warned politicians to stop unwholesome interference in the affairs of the Amnesty Programme being implemented by the Federal government.

The ex-militants who are beneficiaries of the amnesty scheme expressed support and applauded the Chairman of the Implementation Committee, Brig. Gen. Paul Boroh (Rtd) for the smooth running of the programme.

According to the ex-militant leaders, the meddlesomeness of politicians in the Amnesty programme is generating tension and distraction that could derail the programme and escalate insecurity in the region.

The ex-militant leaders, under the aegis of Leadership Peace and Cultural Development Initiatives, (LPCDI)‎ urged the political class to assist the Committee to secure more funding for an enhanced performance.

LPCDI led by Chief Reuben Wilson in a statement issued in Yenagoa, said the Amnesty proclamation for the Niger Delta ex-agitators by Late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua was an effective solution that enhanced oil production.

“The scheme paved way for infrastructural and human capacity development of the Niger Delta Region and her people.

“While we earnestly await the total implementation of the amnesty package and finding lasting solutions to some grey areas in its implementation and compliance by the Federal Government from inception, the people of the Niger Delta Area especially, the youths and elders should appreciate and work with the Office of the Special Adviser to the President and Coordinator of the Amnesty programme, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh.

“Let us show confidence in his efforts and quest for the total implementation of the Amnesty programme for the betterment of all,” LPCDI stated.

The group said that efforts being made by politicians to derail the amnesty programme and sabotage Boroh’s efforts by causing unnecessary tension and distractions in the Niger Delta region were both regrettable and condemnable.

LPCDI noted that working in synergy with Boroh should be the aim of all because he has shown greater level of commitments in meeting the mandate given to him by the President.

“The scheme was rejuvenated with the recent payments of some debts being owed various institutions home and abroad while he works assiduously to offset all outstanding payments.

"We therefore enjoin all well meaning stakeholders of the programme to continue in their support for the actualisation of the programme by the Special Adviser to the President and Coordinator of the Amnesty programme,” the group stated.
