The strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday, seemed to have hit the rocks in some states across the country as workers went to work as usual.

The main secretariat and offices in Yenegoa, capital of Bayelsa opened for work as civil servants reports early to work.

Many of the workers in the main secretariat reported to office as early as 8am.

Some of the workers, who turned up to work said they were not sure if the strike was still holding.

Some of the workers, who spoke to our correspondent in Yenagoa, said they were yet to get update of the strike situation from the NLC.

Mr Tonye Ayama, a civil servant in the state Ministry of Women Affairs, said his office was open for work.

“Yes, we are here to work but just few people have reported, due to the NLC strike over the removal of fuel subsidy and hike in price of petroleum product. Though, right now we are in the office, nothing serious is going on, we are just hanging on. The NLC in the state is yet to address us; so, we are still waiting to hear from the Labour Union; if they say there is strike, then we can go back to our houses,” Ayama said.

Another civil servant, Mr William Agama in the Ministry of Works also said his office was open for work but said they would vacate office if the Union said the strike was holding.

On Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) backing out of the strike, Agama expressed worry over disintegration among the organised labour on the increment in the price of fuel.

Mr Tari Dounana, Chairman, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), Bayelsa chapter said the union was still fighting the good and just fight on the fuel price increase.

Dounana, however urged the organised labour to be more united on the issue that touches workers.

All efforts to speak with Mr John Ndiomu, Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Bayelsa on the situation of the strike in the state proved abortive as calls to his mobile phone could not connect.
