Government offices in Anambra State were shut on Wednesday shut in obedience to the strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates.

Also in line of with the action were members of the Academic State Union of Universities, (ASUU) and a section of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).

However, when News Express visited the start Judiciary, the courts were open as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSON, were on their duty posts, although none of the judges sat at the various courts.

At the state secretariat in Awka, some workers who were unaware of the strike turned back on getting to the complex and seeing the gate under lock.

All local government offices in the state were also closed and some workers who made effort to enter their offices were turned back.

Leaders of ASUU from Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, who earlier sent text messages to members to attend a rally at the Alex Ekwueme Square discovered that the famous area was securely locked and few security patrol vehicles were sighted on adjoining street to the square.

Commercial vehicles and motorcycles operated yesterday in all parts of the state and the presence of their leaders at a briefing by the NLC Chairman, Chief Jerry Nnubia, was an indication that they might join the strike today.

Officials of ASUU were also at the NLC briefing where it was decided that full blown strike would commence today in all parts of the state.

However, workers at the federal government –owned Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi, and its affiliated hospitals were not part of the strike as the various health-related unions directed members not to join the strike.

As a result, all medical doctors, medical laboratory scientists, radiographers, among others, were on their duty posts.
