A country’s minimum wage is the legally mandated lowest amount that employers can pay their workers for a specified unit of work. Minimum wage calculations commonly adhere to hourly or monthly rates, occasionally appearing as daily or weekly figures.

Additionally, minimum wage rates vary among cities and countries, typically higher in advanced nations compared to developing ones. This difference reflects diverse economic contexts and regional priorities.

In Nigeria, Organized Labour has been at loggerheads with the Federal Government and private sector over a new minimum wage, and negotiations have been deadlocked for over three weeks and still counting.

The government and private sector’s insistence on paying N60,000 provoked the declaration of an indefinite strike, which started on June 3, 2024, but was suspended on June 4, 2024.

According to a Wisevoter report, Switzerland boasts the highest estimated minimum gross monthly wage, standing at $4,215.55.
