The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Solomon Arase, on Friday pledged to establish human right desks in all police commands across the country.

Arase gave the pledge in a message at the closing ceremony of a four-day workshop on human right for instructors of police colleges in the Northern states, held in Kaduna.

The IGP, who was represented by Mr Olufemi Adenaike, the AIG in charge of Training and Development, said that the force had already set up a human right desk in Lagos State.

“We are going to make sure we sustain it, and make sure that all police state divisions in the country equally have human right desks.”

According to him, the move is to raise the level of policing in the country to global standard, where the rights of citizens are protected.

He said more changes would be effected in the operations of the police to make it more responsive to the needs of the citizenry.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the end of the workshop, the participants resolved to stop soliciting or accepting gratifications so as not to compromise their duties.

The resolution was signed Uju Agomoh, Executive Director, Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action and ACP Ambrose Abah of Police Training and Development Department.

They called for continued training and retraining of policemen in the areas of administration of justice, and maintenance of law and order.

“That the police should encourage and promote child friendly policing practice while enhancing the protective role of police officers and improving access to justice for children.”

They called on police authorities to improve the condition of service, pension and insurance cover for personnel.

“Officers and men of the police force are human beings and are entitled to all the human rights accruing to human beings.

“The authorities concerned should improve the funding of the service, particularly the provision of adequate and effective working materials and other logistics.” (NAN)
