Revamped moribund International Glass Industry limited (IGI), Aba in Abia State, has supplied about 740, 278 pharmaceutical bottles since it resumed operations last month.

General Manager of IGI, Mr Kelechi Onuiri, who disclosed this, also said that the company has engaged over 500 persons to work in the firm since it resumed manufacturing of glass products in Aba in March.

Onuiri is hopeful that the factory would generate more revenue when fully resuscitated and equally engage more hands.

If the company’s past projections are anything to go by, “the factory would bring in good revenue if the things required are put in place to do more than we are doing right now,” he said.

Speaking during an interview in his office Tuesday in his office on Glass industry Road, Uhuru-Ishimmiri, Aba, said that the factory was currently servicing the needs of pharmaceutical industries outside Abia State, while also speaking with some prospective clients from Abia to maximise production.

He explained that the company employed over 500 workers to ensure full circle production as the factory needed a large number of workers to work in four shifts, round the clock, to ensure that the factory’s furnace does not shut down and cake into inoperability.

“So right now we have many people working here. We have taken more than 500. The number we have may be managed but if we scale, of course we would look for more people to do the work”, Onuiri said.

He further explained that the large staff intake, apart from providing enough man-power for work at the factory, was in line with Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s plan to provide jobs for Abians.

“The governor has done so well, and I am sure that we would be getting something out of here but the challenge is not revenue because although I am not looking at revenue but let people get employment and then next we would scale,” he added.

He said that the factory had incorporated safety measures in its operations in order to save the lives of its workers, adding that safety experts have been hired to help workers to keep safe.

Onuiri attributed the reduced rate of injuries recorded by his workers during the rebuilding of the factory to the new safety awareness he had created for the workforce.
