The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has vehemently rejected the calls for the resignation of Senate President Bukola Saraki, arguing that he has pushed for competitive democracy by his emergence, insisting that the judicial process must run its full course.

President of the group, Mr Ugo Chinyere, said that the emergence of Saraki has come at a time Nigeria needs men like him and urged him and other senators to be firm in their commitment to making Nigeria better.

Speaking during the group’s courtesy call on Saraki at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Mr Ugo pushed for institutionalisation of NYCN in Nigeria and pleaded with the Senate that barriers that restrict young people’s participation in governance should be removed.

The group also commended the Senate President for appointing young people as aides, and showing young people a sense of belonging.

Responding, Saraki encouraged the group to be focuses and forward-looking, noting that NYCN can do better with government support. The Senate President assured of the National Assembly’s determination to give due recognition to Nigerian youths.

Saraki explained that the 8th Assembly is dedicated to passing the Procurement Act, emphasising its potent to improve young people’s life. “Out of the trillions of Naira spent on procurement, we shall ensure that local manufacturers are encouraged accordingly. We recognise the fact that our youths deserve inclusion in governance, and that's why the 8th NASS will ensure their rights aren’t denied,” he said.

Some Senators who were also present at meeting with NYCN included Majority Leader, Ali Ndume; Dino Melaye; Jibrin Barau; and Garba Binta, among others.
