In its drive to towards regular water supply to the people, the Ogun State Government has intensified efforts for the successful completion and delivery of French Development Agency (AFD)-assisted water project in the state.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of a Project Management Committee in Abeokuta, the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Barr. Leke Adewolu, who is also the chairman of the committee, said the project would focus on providing functional water supply services that would guarantee a service extension to over one million people with a pro-masses tariff policy, particularly in the state capital.

“The project focuses on providing a well functional water supply service for the economic development in the capital city, service extension to about one million people and a pro-poor tariff policy. The reform project would further institutionalise water sector with the implementation of the approved Water and Sanitation Policy and Water Sector Reform Law 2015 as well as the introduction of a more efficient and robust water sector,” Adewolu submitted.

According to the commissioner, functions of the committee include providing the overall guidance for the project, ensure project synergy with other water management agencies and donors in the state, mitigating against the attendant problems associated with securing approval and release of fund for the completion of the project.

Also speaking, General Manager of the State Water Corporation, Engr. Mrs. Monsurat Agboola, stated that all due processes have been followed as both the facility and contract agreements between the Federal Government, the State Government and AFD have been dully signed.

She said residents of new and developing areas, where the Water Corporation pipelines have not covered, would now heave a sigh of relief as such areas are central to the project.
