The Golden Boy award, bestowed upon the most promising young footballer under 21 in Europe, is meant to be a crystal ball. It identifies the next big thing, the player destined for greatness.

But just like any prediction, its accuracy is far from perfect. While Lionel Messi stands as the shining example, a lone star in a constellation of ‘almost’, it's time to ask: do Golden Boys truly turn into footballing gold?

Mario Götze (2011): The hero of Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup final win with a stunning goal, Götze's career never quite reached the heights expected. Injuries and inconsistency plagued his time at Bayern Munich, leading to a move back to Borussia Dortmund in 2016. While he enjoyed moments of brilliance, he never quite recaptured his early form and currently plays for Eintracht Frankfurt.

Isco (2012): After winning the Golden Boy award, Isco enjoyed a successful spell at Real Madrid, showcasing his creativity and dribbling skills. However, after falling out of favor under different managers, he currently plies his trade for Real Betis, still capable of moments of magic but not quite reaching the consistent brilliance he displayed earlier in his career.

Paul Pogba (2013): A world-class midfielder on his day, Pogba's career has been defined by moments of brilliance alongside periods of inconsistency. Currently at Juventus but under a doping ban, his future remains uncertain.

Anthony Martial (2015): Despite his undeniable talent, Martial, still in his late twenties, continues to struggle to establish himself firmly at Manchester United. Consistency remains elusive, as flashes of brilliance are frequently offset by periods of quiet play. With his contract set to expire with the Red Devils this summer, Martial faces an uncertain future as a potential free agent.

Renato Sanches (2016): Hailed as the next big thing after his Golden Boy win and a standout performance for Portugal at Euro 2016, Sanches' career has been a rollercoaster. A big-money move to Bayern Munich proved a struggle, and loan spells at Swansea City and Lille followed. Now at AS Roma, he's shown glimpses of his potential but hasn't yet consistently reached the heights he once seemed destined for.

Kylian Mbappé (2017): Arguably the closest challenger to Messi's legacy, Mbappé's career trajectory is still unfolding. His talent is undeniable, having already won a World Cup with France and established himself as a prolific goal scorer for Paris Saint-Germain. At just 24, he has the potential to rewrite the history books, but his future destination and continued development will be key to etching his name among the all-time greats.

João Félix (2019): Possessing undeniable talent, Félix's career has been marked by inconsistency. After a big-money move to Atletico Madrid following his Golden Boy win, he is currently on loan at Barcelona. While he has shown glimpses of his potential, he is yet to fully live up to the lofty expectations set after his award.

Erling Haaland (2020): Already a superstar at Manchester City, Haaland has rewritten the Premier League record books with his phenomenal goalscoring exploits. At just 23, he has already lifted the treble with Manchester City and is widely considered a guaranteed future Ballon d'Or winner. Many believe he could have already won the prestigious award in 2023 if not for Lionel Messi's record-extending eighth victory.

Pedri (2021): Pedri's career is still in its nascent stages. He's already a vital cog in Barcelona's midfield and a key player for Spain. His technical ability and vision are undeniable, but consistency and avoiding injuries will be crucial for him to fulfill his immense potential.

Gavi (2022): The youngest ever Golden Boy winner at just 17 years old, Gavi continues to develop his game at Barcelona alongside established stars. His technical ability, vision, and fearless approach to the game suggest a bright future, but time will tell how he navigates the demands of top-level football.

Jude Bellingham (2023): The latest Golden Boy, Bellingham is already making waves at Real Madrid after a stellar career at Borussia Dortmund. His box-to-box play, leadership qualities, and eye for goal have him pegged as a future star. However, time will tell if he can translate his early promise into sustained excellence at the highest level.

So, what does this tell us? The Golden Boy award, while not guaranteeing a player's future success, can certainly identify exceptional talent. Some, like Messi and Mbappé, carve their own legendary paths. Others, like Götze and Sanches, have successful careers but not quite on the level predicted.

Ultimately, the beautiful game is full of unpredictable twists and turns. The Golden Boy award may not be a foolproof prophecy, but it remains an intriguing indicator, offering a glimpse into the potential of young players who dream of becoming the next generation of footballing giants.
