The World Igbo Congress, WIC, has called on the South-East governors to stop the ongoing demolition of buildings in the region.

According to a statement signed by the WIC Chairman, Dr Festus Okere, and WIC Secretary-General, Sir Chris Ogara, on Tuesday, the congress described the destruction of buildings as “aganizing.”

Recall that recently, the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) demolished buildings at the Enugu Centenary City.

The government through ECTDA Chairman, Uche Anya, said the demolition was premised on the lack of proper approval from the state government.

Anya said this on Saturday in Enugu while reacting to the online trending video alleging that the Enugu Government demolished over 200 buildings in Centenary City.

Reacting to the incident in a statement released to Vanguard by the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Aloy Ejimakor, WIC urged the governors in the five states of the region to be accommodating and supportive.

The statement read, “The World Igbo Congress (WIC) views with urgent concern the reports on video and media platforms spotlighting the recent agonizing images of government-directed destruction of the houses and businesses of fellow Igbo men and women.

“The World Igbo Congress is calling on the Igbo Governors to suspend what seems an indecent haste (in some cases) to demolish the properties of our kith and kin in their own home State and region. They are told/encouraged to become parts of and promote the Aku ruo Uno/Ulo efforts.

“The World Igbo Congress (WIC) is therefore calling on the Igbo Governors to be more accommodating and supportive of those who are working hard to bring development and their residences back home.” (Vanguard)
