Stakeholders in the aviation industry are set for the review of the Civil Aviation Investigation of Air Accidents and Incidents Regulations 2006 slated for Feb. 23.

The review, which is spearheaded by the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), would hold at Western Hotels, Ikeja.

A statement signed by the AIB spokesman, Mr Tunji Oketunbi, on Saturday in Lagos, said the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi and Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, would participate at the workshop.

It said other top aviation stakeholders and professionals from the Ministry of Transportation, aviation agencies, airlines, concessionaires and private sector would also be in attendance.

“Industry professionals like the immediate past President of Aviation Round Table, Capt. Dele Ore and Mr Babatunde Obadofin, Managing Director, Aeroconsult Ltd, will also present papers that will usher in the new policy for accident investigation in the sector.”

It said the review of the existing 2006 policy was pertinent in order for the aviation industry in Nigeria to conform to the updated International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices.

According to the statement, the review became necessary in a bid for its policy to be in tandem with its counterparts around the world.

The statement noted that since the current policy which was promulgated in November 2006 came into operations, there had been series of amendments to accident and incident investigation by ICAO.

It said the Accident Investigation Bureau, as one of the leading globally recognised aviation investigators, could not operate in isolation of global standards and recommended practices.

The statement said: “The management has noticed some gaps in the current regulations, which the new one will seek to address.

“We hereby requested relevant aviation stakeholders such as airline operators, professionals, unions, oil companies operating within the sector, individuals with key interest in aviation and the public for their valuable contributions on the proposed amendment.

“We are doing this in conformity with our Regulation 22, which reads in part, ‘These regulations shall be amended from time to time to bring them into conformity with the provisions of ICAO Annex 13, any amendment thereto and the Civil Aviation Act.” (NAN)
