Manchester United this evening moved above rivals Manchester City to the top of the Premier League with a comfortable win over struggling Sunderland at Old Trafford.

After a subdued start, Memphis Depay scored his fourth goal of the season by tucking in from Juan Mata’s cut-back.

United doubled the lead 40 seconds after the break as Wayne Rooney bundled home from close range to end an 11-game scoring drought in the Premier League.

Mata then converted Ashley Young’s cross as visiting Sunderland stayed bottom.

Until Depay slid in the opener in first-half stoppage time, the hosts looked ponderous in attack but once they went 2-0 up after good work from Anthony Martial, Sunderland had little to offer in response.

Rooney’s fifth goal of the season took him level with Denis Law as United’s joint-third leading league scorer with 171, and ended his longest barren spell in the Premier League which stretched to 1,000 minutes.

David De Gea was rarely troubled but made good saves from Jeremain Lens and Patrick van Aanholt.

Alexis Sanchez’ hat-trick helped Arsenal end Leicester City’s unbeaten start to the season as they claimed a comprehensive 5-2 victory at the King Power Stadium.

The Chile forward had not scored in 2015-16 prior to today’s clash, but he was on top form as Arsene Wenger’s men ultimately cruised to victory.

Leicester, who had to come from behind in their last four league fixtures prior to the clash, took the lead this time round through Jamie Vardy’s fourth goal in as many league games 13 minutes in.

But Arsenal had the lead when Sanchez nudged in from close-range, after Walcott’s 12th goal in his last 13 Premier League starts had cancelled out Vardy’s opener.

Sanchez then capped a stunning Arsenal move to head in his second after the interval, before claiming his hat-trick with a sumptuous strike from distance.

Vardy’s sixth goal of the season rounded off a fine individual performance, only for Olivier Giroud to add another for Arsenal in stoppage time.

At St. James’ Park Ramires and Willian rescued a point for Chelsea after Ayoze Perez and Gino Wijnaldum had given Newcastle a 2-0 lead.

Tim Krul made a couple of big saves to preserve a big point for Newcastle, still winless under Steve McClaren.

Manchester City lost a second league game in a row, with Harry Kane scoring his first club goal this season as Tottenham came from 1-0 down to win.

Kevin de Bruyne angled in an effort to put City in front before Eric Dier equalised with a 25-yard shot.

Toby Alderweireld then nodded Spurs in front from an Erik Lamela free-kick.

Kane side-footed in when team-mate Christian Eriksen’s free-kick came back off the woodwork before Lamela slid home as the visitors chased the game.

Kane scored four goals in his first eight games for Spurs last season but had gone 12 hours without scoring for his club when the clock ticked past 33 minutes here.

He looked to be in for another frustrating game when, having already shot wide, he was denied by Caballero after digging the ball out to get another effort away with his left foot.

But just after the hour mark, he was rewarded for his persistence to end a run of 748 minutes without a goal for his club.
