It is no longer news that some celebrities, including Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde and Dakore Egbuson-Akande, have teamed up to stop smoking scenes in Nollywood movies.

According to a statement by the Creative Director of #SmokeFreeNollywood, Ms. Esther Aghotor, the celebrities joined forces with the campaign backed by Washington DC-based Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids in collaboration with public strategy firm, Gatefield, in celebration of the World No Tobacco Day 2021.

Dakore said on Monday: “As a filmmaker and a parent (of two daughters), I am disturbed by the fact that 370,000 children smoke cigarettes and other tobacco products in Nigeria. Tobacco is one of the leading causes of cancer, and through our films we can promote a healthier country. This is why I pledge to remove smoking from films that are watched by children. #SmokeFreeNollywood.”

But inside sources say the new campaign has created disquiet in the make believe industry as majority of those often seen puffing on screen do so to satisfy the urge of the dangerous passion in real life and are poised to give the campaigners a tough time.

Omotola and Dakore will sure have a hell of time with many of their colleagues, especially the female ones, who can be described as chronic chimneys.

Watch out for a comprehensive list of the leading lovers of smoke in the industry after this time out.
