. . . Mother of three deceased siblings dies of news shock as varsity shut down

Three siblings and the former president, Students Union Government were among several students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) who were crushed to death on Saturday by a trailer belonging to Dangote Cement Company at a spot close to the varsity gate.

According to a post by one Joe Igbokwe on his Facebook wall, the three siblings, two boys and a girl, were born by same parents.

He disclosed that their mother died instantly when the news of her children’s death was broken to her.

The late students, who two among them were in their final year, were working in their shop when the trailer loaded with bags of cement veered off and crushed five shops which were mostly business centres.

Likewise, a former Student Union President of the institution, Adesomoju Samuel Tobi popularly known as “Sampraise” was among the casualties of the accident.

Confirming the incident, the Global President of the National Association of Ondo State Students, Ayoade Kikiowo revealed that Tobi’s body was discovered at the mortuary where casualties were moved to after the accident.

The late former student leader was a 500 level Law student.

Iyantan John, one of Tobi’s friends, wrote on his Facebook wall that “the ugly incident that happened yesterday in Akungba community will not concern the ‘Authorities’ that is why these incidents continue to happen often and often.

“The most painful thing is that I lost a brother who is so dear to me. Former SUG President and 500level Law student, my acquaintance while in AAUA. May God console his family and the families of the late students. #RescueAkungba”

Meanwhile, the university authorities have on Sunday shut down the institution with immediate effect following the protest that trailed the trailer accident.

The statement signed by Acting Registrar of the institution, Opeoluwa Akinfemiwa, reads in parts:

“The management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko has directed that the University be closed with immediate effect until further notice.

“The management advised all students to vacate the campus latest by 6pm today, Sunday 24th January, 2021.” (The Independent)
