The Ghanaian Government has condemned the demolition of a building in the premises of the Nigeria High Commission in Accra, Ghana.

In a press statement released on Sunday, the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration noted that the demolition was a breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and pledged to bring the perpetrators to book.

“Accordingly, investigations are ongoing to unravel the facts of the matter and bring the perpetrators to book, according to the press release.”

The Ghanaian authority says it has beefed up security at the facility and that the situation was under control.

“Whilst expressing regrets over the incident, the Ministry wishes to reassure the Diplomatic Community in Ghana and the Nigeria High Commission in particular, that Ghana remains a law abiding country that upholds the principle of the rule of law where due process is followed at all times.”

The Ghana Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed regret over the incidence and reassured the diplomatic community and especially the Nigerian High Commission of its commitment towards the safety of property and persons in the diplomatic corps.

Reacting to the demolition of the High Commission, the Nigerian government had condemned the action and termed it as criminal attacks on its diplomatic premises in the Ghanaian capital Accra.

The Nigerian Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama said that a building within the compound was demolished by unidentified people using a bulldozer.

“We strongly condemn two outrageous criminal attacks in Accra, Ghana, on a residential building in our diplomatic premises by unknown persons in which a bulldozer was used to demolish the building,” Onyeama tweeted.

“We are engaging the Ghanaian Government and demand urgent action to find the perpetrators and provide adequate protection for Nigerians and their property in Ghana,” he added.

The property in question was located in Accra, on No.10 Barnes Road, according to the Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs ministry.

A statement by the ministry then said that the property’s lease had recently expired recently and the High Commission was exploring the possibility of renewing the lease agreement with the host authorities. (VON)
