A Mercedes Benz truck on Friday went up in flames on the River Niger Bridge after developing some mechanical/electrical faults.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Paschal Anigbo, said: “A truck is currently on fire on the River Niger Bridge, this morning Friday 5 June, 2020. The Fire Service has been contacted.”

No life was lost as the two male involved in the mishap came out unhurt.

Meanwhile, not too from the scene, an auto crash at the Upper Iweka area of Onitsha left one shuttle driver dead.

The crash happened after the break of a Prado Jeep with registration number UWN277PE failed and the vehicle rammed into three shuttle buses – two with registration numbers, AWK279XJ, ATN57XB and a Hijet shuttle with registration number HAL420ZX.

Out of the four male adults involved in the crash, two sustained some degrees of injuries while one of the shuttle bus drivers was confirmed dead by doctors on arrival at St. John Hospital and Maternity.

The Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps Anambra State, CC Andrew A. Kumapayi, in his reaction called on vehicle owners and drivers to always ensure that they check and service their vehicles regularly.

He enjoined them to pay particular attention to the brakes and electrical systems in addition to other units even as he condoled with the family of the dead.
