Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger state, Engineer Mohammad Imam, has been detained by the police over allegations of financial misappropriation.
It was gathered the allegations were levelled by the party’s financial secretary and auditor.
The Nation learnt the chairman was invited by the Police on Tuesday evening after the party’s held an extended meeting with executive members from the 25 local government areas of Niger state.
It was gathered the chairman spent Tuesday night in police custody as Commissioner of Police, Adamu Usman, insisted he was specifically accused of misappropriating party finances since he assumed office in 2015.
The Police however did not confirm the party’s chieftain was detained overnight but the Police chief stated that the Police is investigating the matter.
“We are investigating the matter and shall get to the root of it. We want to find out if there is any substance in the claims of the petitioners.
“The Nigerian Police has the responsibility to investigate any form of criminal complaint from any citizen of the state. That is what we are doing. We are handling the matter professionally to ensure that justice is done to all sides,” he said.
However, the Niger state APC confirmed the party’s chairman spent Tuesday night in police detention.
Confirming this to The Nation, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Idris Abini, said that the chairman has regained his freedom as at 1.30 pm when the reporter called him.
“Yes, the chairman was detained. He slept at the CID last night but all is past as he has been released now. We are on our way back to the party secretariat.” (The Nation)
